James's Story

Back in 2011, our founder James started to bake bread for himself and his family. Something about making bread appealed. It represented a different way of living, one where we are more connected to the origins of our food and to our communities, one where we are more self-reliant and resilient, one where we enjoy the work that we do. James discovered the Real Bread Campaign and became inspired by the stories of others setting up bakeries and community schemes around the world. In 2013 James took the plunge and Wild Bread was born.

What began as a subscription service offering loaves from James’ kitchen to a few loyal customers grew rapidly, first to a farmers’ market, then to a new premises at Macknade, a crowdfunded new oven and our first bread-making workshops, team members and wholesale customers. By 2019 we had outgrown ourselves again and it was time to move once more, this time to our current home.
